He misses the last wagon train in Independence Missouri, tries to catch up but gets lost. He finally ends up in Larkin Spring, one of the small towns among the Oregon Trail. His first day in town he helps the local sheriff, Howard Evans, arrest three outlaws. He decides to stay for the winter and continue west the next season. He becomes a deputy sheriff, kills his first man, and falls in love with the towns prettiest girl, Beth Wilson. The other characters he meets are Minnie Sawyer, Howards black mistress, Tim Hartley, a local cowboy who is in love with a prostitute, Cindy Watkins, and Jack Slade a notorious bank robber who threatens to kill Ben. The story revolves around Bens courting Beth, Howards relationship with Minnie, Tim trying to help Cindy leave the business, and Slades effort to carry out his promise. The story ends with a shoot out from which Slade escapes and Ben promises to find and kill him.
